Sending messages during this computer/drone age has been made easy as technological features keep on evolving and advancing on a daily basis. From the days of web visitation using Desktops and Personal Computers to access the Internet to the days of mobile devices which makes life easier on the go. With this evolution and development, several applications have been designed to aid easy access to internet and communication through messaging Apps. These Apps are developed to suit the different devices and Operating Systems available e.g. iOS, Windows, Android, Java, Symbian, etc. Whenever information is passed, privacy and security of such information are essential. Now! Let’s talk, how secure your messaging App is?

The most popular messaging App at present is WhatsApp as it offers end-to-end encryption. End-to-end encryption allows messages to be passed between two ends with any bridge by the third party i.e. the sender and the receiver, therefore, no one can break-in the communication channel, hence its security. End-to-end encryption is turned on automatically or by default in WhatsApp while in some other Apps. It needs to be turned on in Telegram while in some Apps like Snapchat, it does not have encryption and hackers can always break the communication channel to gain access your messages.

Another issue to be considered is the ‘backup decision.’ After you have chosen your backup cloud disk/App, decide whether you want to backup your chat/messages or not because where your backups are not encrypted. It is advised you turn off automatic backup for top security reasons. At the same time, you should be aware that if you lose your device (phone or PC), your conversations are gone forever.

Let’s consider other Apps. Messages and video chats sent over Google Hangouts could be hand over to the law enforcement agency on request. The ‘off-the-record’ feature in Hangout deletes messages from your history while it leaves the messages behind on the Google’s server. Facebook messaging service does not offer end-to-end encryption automatically but the Smartphone App offers a ‘secret’ option which allows messages to be sent with end-to-end encryption – such messages will not show up in your inbox on Facebook.com except on your Facebook App on your Smartphone.

The telegram also offers end-to-end encryption in a feature called ‘secret chat, ’ but you have to turn this feature on as it is not turned on by default. Messages sent using Message App on Android phone is not secured. The signal is secured as it makes use of open source. Its security level can be examined by independent users for security holes. Signal also helps to verify that you are communicating with the intended recipient. Such Apps that use ‘wall-garden approach’ keep the rest of the world in the dark; this allows the users to trust the company. Apart from Signal, Telegram also uses open source for its security. Messages sent over Confide are end-to-end encrypted and also disappeared after they are read, said the company. Text messages are not encrypted and can be recalled on a court order.

Using encryption, open source, message deletion, minimum metadata storage and other security means, you can now evaluate the security level and trustworthiness of your messaging App. This does not mean you should throw away or abandon the Apps that do not fit into these security standards stated above.
